ABOUT
This was the first in-person 1KSA Genome Assembly Workshop, which brought together sample contributors from across the country for two days of practical learning.
This workshop was designed for researchers with limited bioinformatics experience, the workshop focused on de novo genome assembly using (TAG)Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) data and the Flye assembler, run on the CHPC.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Participants followed the official 1KSA genome assembly pipeline (available on GitHub) and gained experience in:
Running genome assemblies
Troubleshooting common pipeline issues
Assessing genome quality and completeness
PARTICIPANT FEEDBACK
Here are some comments we received after the workshop:
"I hope to be able to do my own genome assembly and then to expand on other tools that the CHPC has that could add value to my study."
"I will be applying everything that I have learnt to my own PhD research project. The workshop was phenomenal and exposed me to genome assembly software and assessment tools. Before the workshop, I was only familiar with transcriptome assembly and although similar, I was not confident with genome assembly. I am pleased to say that I am now confident about the next steps of my project."
