Past Training

NRF-SAIAB, Makhanda (Grahamstown) (hybrid attendance available)

The South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB), in collaboration with DIPLOMICS, ran a training workshop aimed at upskilling researchers to build practical bioinformatics skills.


NRF-SAIAB invited participants to an in-person training workshop designed to get them up and running on the command line and HPC environments used in modern genomics research.


The training was held in person at NRF-SAIAB (Makhanda) or online.


Participants learned:

  • Navigating the Unix/Linux shell with confidence

  • Working on High Performance Computing (HPC) clusters

  • Managing software environments with Conda for reproducible bioinformatics workflows

Several ways the training has benefited our participants

"Learning to use command-line tools and HPC systems has provided me with a better understanding of how to manage and process data more efficiently and reproducibly. I plan to incorporate these tools into my research when conducting whole genome sequencing on our research samples and in the research on entomopathogenic viruses to analyse the data more efficiently, improve reproducibility, and support the identification and characterisation of novel baculovirus isolates for sustainable biological pest control applications."
"The training has provided me with practical skills in using the Unix shell and high-performance computing systems, which align closely with my research in biological pest control. These skills will enable me to manage and analyse large genomic datasets more efficiently and support bioinformatics workflows associated with whole genome sequencing. I plan to apply these tools to improve the speed, accuracy, and reproducibility of viral genome analyses, contributing to the identification and characterisation of novel baculovirus isolates for sustainable pest management applications."
"I am now able to access Unix Shell and working on a server. My plan is to run files on a high performance computer to run scripts that will aid in finding targeted biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) from a pool of +-600 BGCs."
"I hope to use the skills learnt to be able to analyse my raw genomic data, assemble whole genomes, and develop scripts for other forms of genomic analyses."
