Fundamentals in Molecular Biology

ABOUT

The South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB), in collaboration with DIPLOMICS, will be running a training workshop aimed at upskilling of researchers interested in entering into the field of molecular biology or those that wish to refresh previously obtained skills. The course will entail theoretical as well as practical training components.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the conclusion of the workshop, participants will have learned about the following:

  • DNA extraction methodologies

  • Nanodrop DNA quantification

  • PCR

  • Agarose gel electrophoresis

  • PCR product purification

  • Preparation of samples for Sanger sequencing

  • Sanger sequence data analysis

PARTICIPANT FEEDBACK

Here are some comments we received after the workshop:

"I also appreciated the interactive nature of the sessions and the chance to engage with facilitators and other students, which made the learning process both informative and enjoyable. It was exciting to see how these techniques can be applied to real-world biological research, especially in marine and ecological studies, which aligns closely with my research interests."
"I enjoyed finally being able to understand the reasoning behind the rules we follow in the lab. Very random example: why we only ever load one primer into a Sanger sequencing reaction."
"I enjoyed a lot of things. Finding out there are individuals with similar interest in different field is really a great experience. Getting to learn from instructors with vast amount of knowledge is another incredible thing we sometimes do not acknowledge."
