Bioinformatics Workshop: GWAS & LAAA modelling

ABOUT

Participants gained valuable knowledge and practical skills in utilizing essential methods and software for GWAS and LAAA. Notably, the workshop provided hands-on experience working on a High-Performance Cluster (HPC), enhancing participants technical proficiency.

The workshop also fostered networking opportunities among researchers in the field.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the conclusion of the workshop, participants will have learned about the following:

Genome-wide Association Studies (GWASs):

  • Theoretical fundamentals

  • Practical data preparation using relevant software

  • Execution of GWAS analyses

  • Interpretation of results

  • Data visualization techniques

  • Admixture Mapping and Local Ancestry

Adjusted Allelic Association (LAAA) Models:

  • Theoretical framework

  • Practical demonstrations of LAAA model implementation

Polygenic Risk Scores (PRSs):

  • Introductory concepts and applications

The workshop utilized the following software packages:

  • PLINK

  • BCFTools

  • SHAPEIT

  • KING

  • ADMIXTURE

  • RFMix

  • pong

  • R 3.6.0+ and RStudio

PARTICIPANT FEEDBACK

Here are some comments we received after the workshop:

“I already told my friends that are also studying bioinformatics to apply to future Diplomics workshops. It is so important for us to network and develop real-life skills in this niche field.”
“I do believe it should be longer. Working with such data and on someone else system can be scary and confusing. I think a good refresher to the commands being used in the seminar is helpful as that is where most of us started freaking out.”
