UPGL-NGS Open Day

ABOUT

The University of Pretoria Genomics Laboratory will host a hybrid Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) information day in collaboration with DIPLOMICS (DIstributed PLatform in OMICS) and the ACGT (African Centre for Gene Technologies).

Presentations by researchers and students will focus on the practical aspects of NGS. This NGS open day offers opportunity to network and discuss practicalities for NGS sequencing and building the greater NGS community in South Africa

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the conclusion of the workshop, participants will have learned about the following:

  • Brief overview on the different Next Generation Sequencing technologies,

  • The latest NGS developments and their applications: Short read sequencing (Illumina, MGI, Ion Torrent), Long read sequencing (Pacific BioSciences, Oxford Nanopore), scaffolding (Pore-C, High-C and BioNano) and single cell sequencing (10X Genomics)

  • A discussion on sample quality control and Bioinformatics requirements.

  • NGS sequencing and data analysis, including advice on overcoming challenges you might experience

PARTICIPANT FEEDBACK

Here are some comments we received after the workshop:

"I learned alot that is outside my field which is medical microbiology. I have seen alot of online programs that I can use for my own research that I will be doing."
"I would train my juniors about the things I will learn in the sessions."
"What I enjoyed most about the event was the diversity and depth of the presentations, especially the real-world case studies demonstrating how NGS is being applied across different fields such as human health, biodiversity research, and forensics."
"The interactive Q&A sessions and panel discussions provided a valuable opportunity to engage directly with experts and gain practical insights into challenges and solutions in NGS implementation. Additionally, the networking opportunities allowed me to connect with professionals from various institutions, opening avenues for future collaboration."
